Shoulder OA is a condition that occurs when the cartilage that lines the sides of the shoulder joint is worn or torn away. Shoulder OA may be caused by injury or wear and tear of the shoulder over time. In advanced cases, the cartilage is completely worn away and bone to bone contact of the bones of the shoulder occurs. It is common to have rotator cuff tears with shoulder OA due to over use and weakening of the rotator cuff. Shoulder OA leads to pain that increases with activity and decreases with rest, decreased shoulder range of motion, shoulder and arm weakness, and pain at rest, and difficulty sleeping as the condition worsens.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your shoulder to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the shoulder and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion of the shoulder and arm. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat, ice and/or electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
