Hip OA/DJD is a condition that occurs when the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones of the hip joint is worn or torn away. Hip OA/DJD may be caused by injury or wear and tear of the hip over time. In advanced cases, the cartilage is completely worn away and bone to bone contact of the bones of the hip occurs. Hip OA/DJD leads to sharp, shooting and/or dull, achy pain in the hip, groin, thigh, knee or buttocks, stiffness in the hip joint especially after sitting or sleeping, pain with standing from a seated position, pain and difficulty putting on shoes and socks, loss of hip range of motion and weakness of the muscles of the hip and thigh.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your hip and core musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hip and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat, ice and/or electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
