A break in the thigh bone (femur), shin bone (tibia) or knee cap (patella) is usually caused by direct trauma or by twisting or bending. It leads to severe pain in the area, tenderness and swelling in the knee, pain when trying to move the knee, inability to straighten a bent knee under its own power, difficulty bearing weight on the injured leg, visible deformity and numbness or coldness in the area.
Whether you have surgery for your fracture or not, the Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your hip, knee, ankle, core and leg musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include gait training and balance training exercises to allow you to return to normal and safe ambulation and manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hip, knee, ankle and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion of the hip, knee and leg. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
