Partial or complete rupture of the quadriceps tendon which connects the quadriceps muscle (thigh muscle) to the patella (knee cap). When the quadriceps tendon is torn, it results in the loss of function of the quadriceps muscle which is responsible for straightening the knee or slowing the knee when bending or squatting. When torn it leads to pain, tenderness, swelling, warmth or redness around the quadriceps tendon and knee joint. Usually a pop or rip is felt above the knee cap at the time of injury. Pain when trying to straighten the knee or when the knee is bent, and weakness or inability to straighten the knee when seated.
Whether you have surgery for your quadriceps tendon tear or not, the Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your knee and leg musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include gait training and balance training exercises to allow you to return to normal and safe ambulation. Manual therapy techniques will be included, such as massage and stretching of the knee, hip and ankle and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion of the ankle and knee. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
