Pain on the inside of the shin due to too much stress that is placed on the tibia. The muscles that attach to the tibia can cause an overload of stress on the bone. These muscles include the posterior tibialis muscle, the soleus muscle and the flexor digitorum longus muscle. It is common in long distance runners, sprinters, dancers, gymnasts and military personnel. Continued activity without repairing the breakdown leads to inflammation of the lining of the bone and the tendon insertions into the bone and its lining. It is caused by weakness or imbalance of the muscles of the leg and calf, poor running or walking technique due to flat feet, and/or sudden change in activity level, distance or intensity of a workout.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include gentle range of motion and stretching to help relieve pain. We will include strengthening exercises that target weak and overworked muscles. Many times the muscles in your hip are weak or not working correctly, therefore, we will target those muscles to relieve stress on your lower leg. We will also strengthen the muscles associated with the arch in your foot and the muscles of your shin to decrease over pronation. We will include balance training exercises to improve ankle stability and leg strength. Manual therapy techniques such as massage to the shin muscles and stretching of the surrounding muscles to restore normal motion of the leg and to facilitate healing will be included. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as ice and/or heat to decrease swelling, pain and ready the body for exercise.
