Inflammation and pain at the outer hip caused by overuse and/or strain of the gluteus medius muscle and its tendon attachment to the femur. The gluteus medius muscle is responsible for stabilizing the hip when walking, running and jumping and for moving the leg and thigh away from the other leg. Gluteus medius tendonosis may occur without any injury in those with strength deficits, in people with legs of unequal lengths, in people with a wide pelvis and knocked knees. It is also common in endurance athletes such as runners and triathletes. Gluteus medius tendonosis leads to pain that increases with walking and running, tenderness over the outer hip and muscle weakness in the muscles that surround the hip.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your legs and core musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hip and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
