The sudden or gradual break in the supportive ligaments surrounding a spinal disk. The jellylike contents of the disk then protrude and may push on the spinal cord or nerves coming from the spinal cord. If you have a herniated disc in the neck (cervical spine) you may have pain, tingling, numbness or any combination of these symptoms in the arm, shoulder or neck. If you have a herniated disc in the lower back (lumbar spine) you may have pain, tingling, numbness, weakness or any combination of these symptoms in the back, buttocks or legs.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include exercises that involve specific movements to relieve nerve pressure and decrease pain and other symptoms, especially during the early stages. We have found that stretching and flexibility exercises to improve mobility in the joints and muscles of your spine, arms and legs can be key to pain relief. We will also incorporate specific strengthening exercises focused on your core musculature and the muscles of your arms, shoulders and legs. The muscles of your trunk provide support for the joints throughout your spine. Manual therapy (gentle hands-on techniques) such as massage, stretching, traction and joint mobilizations may be used to improve the mobility of stiff joints and tight muscles that may be contributing to your symptoms. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat, ice and/or electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
