The hip is a ball and socket joint with the ball from the thigh bone (femur) and the socket from the pelvis (acetabulum).  The labrum is a ring of cartilage that lies between the femoral head (ball) and the acetabulum (socket).  It acts as a stabilizer and a shock absorber in the hip. A labral tear results when a part of labrum separates or is pulled away from the socket. Most often, a labral tear is the result of repetitive trauma to the hip, either due to running or repeated twisting and cutting.  A labral tear leads to a pain described as a deep ache in the front of your hip or groin, painful clicking or catching with hip movements, pain with prolonged sitting or walking, sharp pain with squatting, weakness in the muscles surrounding the hip and stiffness in the hip joint.

The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your injury that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your legs and core musculature to allow you to return to normal daily activity.  We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the hip and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion.  If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities such as heat and/or ice to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
