Replacement of the ends of the bones of the knee joint with a prosthetic or artificial knee. Replacement parts consist of a metal cap placed on the end of the femur (thigh bone), a cap placed on top of the tibia (shin bone), and sometimes the knee cap is replaced as well. It is performed on the knee when all other medical interventions no longer provide pain relief. It is usually performed on patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other bone diseases or fractures.
The Physical Therapists at Apple Physical Therapy will design a personalized treatment plan specific to you and your deficits that will include range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises to improve mobility and strength in your knee, leg and core musculature and to allow you to return to normal daily activity. We will incorporate gait training and balance activities to allow you to return to normal and safe walking and the use of stairs. We will include manual therapy techniques such as massage and stretching of the knee and surrounding muscles to restore normal motion. If necessary, your PT may elect to use modalities to help reduce pain and ready the body for exercise.
